Welcome Back: Fall at Pythagoras Academy

Dear Parents and Guardians,
It has been such a pleasure welcoming our new and returning students back to Pythagoras Academy for another amazing year of learning and growing together as individuals and as a community. This year is also unique and special to our staff as we have been able to safely open up our school environment to volunteers, families and extended members of our community. Students seem very motivated and encouraged by the return of this familiar routine.

As we enter into this new season of tree leaves changing color and the temperature growing colder we are reminded of the value of growth and change. At Pythagoras Academy, we look forward to watching all of our students evolve and flourish during this 2022-2023 school year.

With kind regards,

Ms. Leah Zeballos
Director of Early Learning

Junior Kindergarten "JK"

Junior Kindergarten students have been busy making new friends, learning new routines and starting their school journey! A great amount of parents and siblings have come out to our Welcome event and Sibling Pumpkin Patch event, making the start of students academic journeys warm and inviting. We are proud to announce a new social media channel on Instagram, namely little_pythagoras_academy, where we will share upcoming events and recent academic adventures with our community. Please join us by following!

Grades K/1

In Kindergarten, we have started off the year by focusing on rules and routines. We are learning our letter sounds with the help of Fun Family Phonics. Through sight word recognition and poetry we are starting to read. In numeracy, we have been decomposing numbers to ten and have been participating in number talks, meanwhile, in science, we have been exploring apples with our five senses.  In Grade 1, we have been learning about how everyone has a unique name and their own stories. In numeracy, we have been learning about patterns, numbers to 20 and skip counting by 2s.

Grades 2/3

Grade 2 classes have been exploring patterns in numeracy. Taking the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful Autumn weather, they completed an outdoor inquiry where students built various repeating, growing and spiral patterns with leaves. Grade 3 classes are becoming creative writers by exploring story elements and sequencing in literacy. Putting their imaginations to the test, they have written spooky stories to celebrate Halloween.

Grades 4/5

Grade 4 students welcomed the new school year by exploring the book “All are Welcome.” Students collaborated on various activities where they identified and explored ways the school and classroom community can be a welcoming and safe place. In grade 5, students are establishing routines and building community by working collaboratively, encouraging each other with their public speaking skills and gaining confidence through team-building activities. Students hosted the Truth and Reconciliation assembly where they led the school in a pledge to be Indigenous allies.

Grades 6-8

Students in Grade 6 are starting the year with mindfulness exercises and positive affirmations to build up their confidence. The students have been exploring the life of First Nations students in Residential Schools, as well practicing the reading strategies with the book “I Am Not a Number." In numeracy and science, students worked on collaborative skills and investigated large numbers by creating a classroom timeline of the universe.

Grade 7/8 students are beginning the year by building their confidence, speaking skills and classroom community through daily sharing circles. Students are learning about the power of a growth mindset to set their goals for the week, as well as for their school year. In social studies and literacy, students have been exploring the life of students in Residential Schools through books and self-guided research.

IT/ADST at Pythagoras Academy

This year Pythagoras Academy is proud to announce that nine enthusiastic students from Grades 4 to 6 were chosen to participate in the First Lego League Challenge competition for the 2022-23 season. This is our fourth season taking part in FLL Challenge and we are very excited about it! The name of the team is Pythagoras Penguins #57708 and consists of the following students: Winnie, Lanice, Gino, Julie, Merrick, Joy, Paige, Anderson and Anthony.

The theme of this year is Superpowered. While working with this theme students have an opportunity to immerse themselves in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering. Furthermore, all the activities in preparation for the FLL Challenge are aligned with the BC curriculum. Students will engage in a range of rigorous and relevant learning opportunities, develop an innovative solution to a real-world problem, design, build and code a LEGO® robot to solve the themed challenge missions.

We started to prepare for the Qualifying tournament in January at the beginning of September.

Wellness at Pythagoras Academy

The start of the school year is a transitional period, leaving behind summer days for the more structured school days. School is not only a place of learning for children, but a place for enjoyment and socializing. While this can bring a sense of anxiety for some students, it also brings excitement and joy to reconnect with old friends and develop new friendships.

To help with this transition, students at Pythagoras Academy have been engaging in activities that build on community building and exploring ways to handle new challenges: new grades, more homework, new friends and much more. Through a variety of activities, students have been working collaboratively on exploring the community and practicing healthy ways to handle the stress of back to school.

Literacy at Pythagoras Academy
Literacy is the ability to understand, critically analyze, and create a variety of forms of communication, including oral, written, visual, digital, and multimedia. By sharing our culture through mediums like storytelling, food and illustrations students and staff can strengthen their understanding and build community around differences and similarities. Mrs. Powell recently visited the grade 3 classes, during Rosh Hashanah. This celebration, warmly known to some as the Jewish New Year, celebrates the new year with friends and family and serves as a time to be introspective. One popular custom involves eating apple slices dipped in honey, signifying the hope that the new year will be sweet and prosperous. As such, neatly sliced apples and delicately poured honey was shared amongst the grade 3 classes, while a story outlining the celebration was also shared. A wonderfully engaging and delicious way to partake in literacy!
Featured Teachers

Mr. Lee: New Band Program
This is the first year that Pythagoras Academy is facilitating a concert band/ instrumental music program. The program requires extra commitment from students, staff and families inside and outside of the school. As the beginning of the year goes on, classes have been filled with incredibly dedicated musicians, who are getting better and better as an ensemble! We can't wait for the upcoming performances! Thank you Mr. Lee!

Mr. Cope: New Student Committee
What responsibilities do our newly formed student council members have? They improve the school by ensuring younger students are connected, not lonely and safe. Student Committee members make recommendations towards school improvements, like options within school lunches and snacks. They keep students updated on all events and feature student writing, passion and inspiration in their monthly newsletters. They are always looking for new ways to help the school community! This year's Student Committee includes: Grade 7: Megan & Yvonne, Grade 6: Nora, Emma, Sienna & Halin, Grade 5: Tobias, Christie, Amiera, Jessie and Grade 4: Joy, Zoe, Seolin, Julie! Thank you Mr. Cope!

Ms. Verma: Diwali Festival
On October 24th we celebrated Diwali. It was a wonderful event where we learned about the history behind the celebration, as well as ate the carefully prepared traditional foods, participated in authentic activities and wore bright attire. Ms. Verma graciously led this initiative, with the help of Ms. Mondal, Ms. Dhaliwal, Mr. Kwan, Ms. Bolt, Ms. Vihovska, and Ms. Shudo. Students, staff and families loved incorporating and celebrating this holiday!
